The e-Residency card is not a bank account
Estonia's e-Residency lets you incorporate an OÜ remotely. What it does not do — and never has — is open a bank account for you. Since LHV and Swedbank tightened non-resident onboarding after 2019, most e-Residents end up on Wise Business or Payoneer, both EMIs, not full banks. That is fine for European invoicing but fragile for Stripe US, Amazon US, and enterprise ACH.
A Wyoming LLC opens a real US operating bank account (Mercury via our Partner referral) plus Stripe US in the same 4-business-day window.
The 20% distributed-profit tax nobody talks about
Estonia's famous 'zero tax on retained earnings' is real — until you take money out. When the OÜ distributes profit to the owner, Estonia levies 20/80 (effectively 20%) corporate income tax at distribution. If you plan to eventually pay yourself, that tax is real.
A Wyoming LLC owned by a non-resident is a pass-through disregarded entity for US federal tax; on non-ETBUS income there is no US federal tax at the entity level. Your home-country CFC and personal-tax rules still apply, of course — but the US does not add its own layer.
Where Estonia OÜ genuinely wins
Two scenarios: (1) you sell primarily to EU B2B clients who require an EU VAT number and an EU legal wrapper; (2) you plan to accumulate earnings inside the company for years before distributing (Estonia's deferral is genuine here). For everyone else — US clients, US platform payouts, holding IP, invoicing globally — Wyoming is faster to stand up and cheaper to run.
Can you run both?
Yes and it is a common pattern. Wyoming LLC for US and global-USD revenue, Estonia OÜ for EU B2B invoicing and EU VAT registration. The two do not conflict. Coordinate with a tax adviser in your country of residence because your CFC rules will care.

Common Mistakes Choosing Estonia
- 1
Assuming e-Residency = bank account
It does not. LHV rejects most non-EU e-Residents; you land on Wise or Payoneer, which is a step down for US operations.
- 2
Underestimating the 20% distribution tax
'Zero tax' applies only while profits stay inside. The moment you distribute, 20% is due. Model both retention and distribution.
- 3
Ignoring your home-country CFC rules
Both Estonia and US LLCs can trigger CFC. In some countries the LLC is transparent and better; in others the OÜ is preferable. Do the check first.
- 4
Using Estonia to reach US customers
US enterprise AP systems prefer US legal entities. Estonia adds foreign-vendor friction on Fortune 500 vendor onboarding.
