Why Mercury and not a traditional US bank
Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citi all technically accept US LLCs owned by non-residents. In practice, they require the beneficial owner to visit a US branch in person, provide a US utility bill (which you do not have), and often maintain a $10,000–$25,000 average balance. For a founder in Sofia, São Paulo or Karachi, these are dealbreakers.
Mercury was purpose-built for the founder Chase does not want. It is a fintech layered over Choice Financial Group and Evolve Bank & Trust (both FDIC-insured US banks). You never enter a US branch — the entire onboarding, funding and operation happens online. Founders in 200+ countries have opened Mercury accounts against a US LLC.
Mercury also offers native features that traditional banks do not: unlimited virtual and physical debit cards, direct API for treasury automation, Mercury Raise for investor introductions, Mercury Treasury (yield on operating cash) and Mercury IO (working-capital line for e-commerce sellers).
What Mercury requires from a non-resident LLC owner
Mercury's onboarding for a foreign-owned Wyoming LLC asks for six items:
- Certificate of Formation (Wyoming Articles of Organization). We supply this at formation.
- EIN confirmation letter (IRS CP-575 or CP-575A). We supply this after EIN issuance.
- Operating Agreement signed by all members. Included in every formation package.
- Beneficial-owner ID. Passport is accepted for non-US persons; national ID cards from EU countries also work.
- Proof of address for the beneficial owner. Utility bill, bank statement or government letter dated in the last 90 days. Any country.
- Business description in 2–3 sentences. Plain-English description of what the LLC does. Vague answers ("consulting") get flagged; specific answers ("software consultancy building Shopify apps for European merchants") clear underwriting in first pass.
No US phone number required at application. No US visit required. No US utility bill required. If any onboarding step asks for these, you are speaking to a different bank.
The Wyoming Experts Mercury pipeline
As a Mercury Banking Partner, our clients are submitted through a dedicated partner API. The practical differences are:
- Pre-formatted application. We pre-fill the LLC's legal name, address, EIN, formation date and beneficial-owner ID from the formation record — you review and sign rather than transcribe.
- Compliance context. Mercury's underwriting team knows the LLC came through us with a completed EIN process, valid operating agreement and clean Wyoming registration. This reduces manual review time.
- Escalation path. If an application is stuck in review beyond 7 business days, we escalate directly to our Mercury partner contact — not through the public support queue.
- Approval timeline. Median time from application submission to funded account for our clients is 3–7 business days, versus 10–20 days for cold applications.
Step-by-step timeline — day one to funded account
Day 1 — LLC formation submitted
Wyoming Secretary of State receives Articles of Organization. Filing confirmed within hours.
Day 2–3 — Certificate of Formation issued
Wyoming returns the stamped Certificate. EIN application (Form SS-4) is faxed to the IRS on your behalf the same day.
Day 3–5 — EIN issued
IRS returns EIN via fax. CP-575 confirmation letter follows by mail (we scan it for you).
Day 5–6 — Mercury application submitted
All documents pre-loaded through the partner pipeline. You e-sign the beneficial-owner attestation.
Day 6–12 — Mercury review
Mercury runs KYC, sanctions screening and business-purpose review. Median: 3–7 business days from submission.
Day 7–14 — Account funded
You receive login credentials, routing and account numbers, and can order debit cards. Fund the account from your home bank, Wise or Payoneer.
Day 10–20 — Stripe, Amazon, Shopify connected
With the Mercury account live, downstream integrations activate over the next week.
What if Mercury declines the application?
Mercury declines roughly 5–8% of applications from foreign-owned LLCs. The most common reasons: business description too vague, business type on Mercury's restricted list (adult content, gambling, cannabis, unlicensed money services), or beneficial-owner country on a sanctions-adjacent list.
If the application is declined, we route clients to one of three alternates with equivalent workflows:
- Relay Financial — similar model, native integration with QuickBooks and Xero, per-vendor virtual cards.
- Wise Business — not a full US bank but provides US routing and account numbers, cheaper FX than Mercury.
- Grasshopper Bank — full-service US business bank open to non-residents; more paperwork, but accepts business types Mercury declines.

Mercury Application Mistakes That Cause Rejection
- 1
Vague business description
'Consulting' or 'e-commerce' triggers manual review. 'Amazon FBA seller shipping pet accessories to US customers, expecting $8,000/month in year one' clears first pass.
- 2
Applying before EIN is confirmed
Mercury requires the EIN. Applying with 'EIN pending' pushes the entire application into a manual queue with a 20-day tail.
- 3
Passport with fewer than 6 months validity
Mercury's compliance system rejects passports expiring in less than 6 months. Renew before applying.
- 4
Listing a virtual mailbox as the beneficial-owner address
The LLC's address can be Wyoming (registered agent). But your personal address must be a real residential address. Virtual addresses trigger compliance review.
- 5
Restricted-industry business description
Adult content, gun sales, gambling, cannabis, ICOs and unlicensed money services are declined. If your business touches these, choose an alternate bank up front.
