Still waiting on your EIN?
No SSN needed. We file for your EIN as part of formation so you can open banking and payment accounts without the IRS runaround.

Short answer: yes, Northwest Registered Agent will obtain an EIN for you without a Social Security number. It is a paid add-on and they do it correctly.
Longer answer, and the reason you are reading this: the service exists, but the timeline is the variable nobody discusses honestly, and a slow EIN blocks everything else you were planning to do this quarter.
Here is what actually happens behind that add-on checkbox.
Why the EIN is different when you have no SSN
The IRS runs an online EIN application that issues the number instantly. It is only available to applicants whose responsible party already has an SSN or an ITIN. No SSN, no online application — the door is simply closed.
What remains is Form SS-4, submitted through the channels the IRS keeps open for international applicants: fax, mail, or the international phone line. Fax and phone are days. Mail is months. Which channel your provider uses is, in practical terms, the entire service.
We wrote the full mechanics up in our EIN for non-residents guide, including what goes on each line of the SS-4.
What Northwest actually does
You buy the add-on, you supply your details, and their team prepares and submits the SS-4 on your behalf, listing you as the responsible party with a foreign address and no taxpayer identification number.
That is a legitimate, correct filing. Northwest is not cutting corners.
Where founders get frustrated:
- The quoted window is wide. Expect language along the lines of several weeks, sometimes considerably more. Wide quotes protect the provider; they do not help you plan.
- There is no chasing. Once the application is in, it is in. If the IRS goes quiet, nobody is calling on your behalf.
- Support runs on US hours. A single clarifying question can burn two days if you are in Asia or the Gulf.
- It is decoupled from the rest. Northwest is not thinking about your bank application, so a detail that is technically fine on the SS-4 but mismatched against your passport will not get flagged.
The responsible party question, where most errors happen
The SS-4 asks who the responsible party is. For a single-member foreign-owned LLC, that is you — the individual who controls the entity — not your accountant, not a nominee, and not the company itself.
Three mistakes we see repeatedly on filings made elsewhere:
- Name mismatch. The name on the SS-4 must match your passport exactly, in the same order. "Juan Carlos Perez Garcia" and "Juan C. Perez" are two people to a bank's verification system.
- Wrong entity classification. Ticking the wrong box changes how the IRS expects you to file for the rest of the company's life, and unwinding it is written correspondence, not a phone call.
- An address that contradicts the formation. If the registered agent address, the business address and the SS-4 address tell three different stories, expect a manual review somewhere down the line.
An EIN issued with wrong details is worse than no EIN, because you will not discover it until a bank runs verification six months later. That is why we file the EIN and the formation together rather than as separate products — the details cannot drift if one person prepares both. See our formation service for how the two are sequenced.
Realistic timelines in 2026
| Route | Typical time to EIN | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IRS online | Minutes | Unavailable without SSN or ITIN |
| Fax, filed by a specialist | 1–5 business days | Depends on IRS load and a clean form |
| International phone line | Same day when it connects | Long hold times; requires someone authorised |
| Standard provider add-on | 2–8 weeks | Queued, no follow-up |
| 2–4 months | Avoid |
Our own clients usually have the number within 24 to 72 hours of state approval. There is no trick to it. It is a clean form, the right channel, and someone who follows up the same week rather than the same quarter.
What the delay actually costs you
Founders under-price this. Without an EIN you cannot:
- open a US business bank account
- complete Stripe or PayPal business onboarding
- sign most B2B contracts that require a W-9 or W-8BEN-E with an entity number
- register for a state sales tax permit if your model needs one
Six weeks of waiting is six weeks of not invoicing. Measured that way, the difference between a $75 add-on and a package that handles it in three days is not really a price comparison at all.
Can you just do it yourself?
Yes, and some people should. If you are comfortable with IRS forms, have a reliable fax route, and can be patient about follow-up, filing your own SS-4 costs nothing but time. The IRS charges no fee for an EIN — anyone telling you otherwise is describing their own service fee.
Do it yourself if: you have formed a US entity before, you understand disregarded-entity classification, and your name and documents are simple and consistent.
Do not do it yourself if: your legal name is transliterated from a non-Latin script, you have a business partner, you are unsure whether you are a disregarded entity or a partnership, or you need the bank account this month.
After the EIN: the part nobody mentions at checkout
Getting the number is not the finish line. Once you have an EIN as a foreign-owned single-member LLC, you have an annual federal filing obligation — Form 5472 attached to a pro-forma 1120 — regardless of whether the company earned a cent. The penalty for missing it starts at $25,000.
Northwest does not file it. Most formation providers do not. Read our Form 5472 guide and put the deadline in your calendar the day the EIN letter arrives. While you are there, check the state-side obligation too: the Wyoming annual report.
And when the EIN does arrive, the next step is banking. What determines approval is document consistency, not company age — our Mercury guide for non-residents covers what to prepare before you apply.
Line by line: what goes on the SS-4
You do not need to memorise the form, but knowing what the sensitive fields are makes it much easier to check anyone's work — including ours.
- Legal name of entity. Must match the Wyoming articles of organization character for character, including "LLC" formatting.
- Mailing address. A foreign address is perfectly acceptable here. Using a registered agent address instead can create inconsistencies later with banks.
- Responsible party and their identifying number. Your full legal name as it appears on your passport. Where there is no SSN or ITIN, this is left blank rather than filled with a placeholder — placeholders cause rejections.
- Type of entity. For a single foreign owner this is normally a disregarded entity; for two or more it is a partnership. Ticking the wrong box shapes every future filing.
- Reason for applying. Usually "started new business" or "banking purposes". Both are accepted; consistency with your actual situation is what matters.
- Date business started and accounting year end. December is the sensible default for almost everyone.
Two of those fields — responsible party and entity type — account for the overwhelming majority of problems we are asked to fix on filings made elsewhere.
What the EIN letter looks like and why you should keep it
The IRS issues a CP 575 notice confirming the EIN. If the application was filed by fax, you may first receive the number on the returned confirmation, with the letter following by post to the address on the form.
Keep the digital copy somewhere permanent. Banks, payment processors and marketplaces ask for it repeatedly, and replacing it means requesting a 147C letter from the IRS, which is another wait. Founders who lose it in a laptop reinstall discover this at the worst possible moment.
A timing plan that actually works
- Week 1: file the Wyoming LLC. Nothing else can start until the state approves it.
- Week 1, immediately after approval: submit the SS-4. Do not wait for physical documents.
- Week 1–2: EIN issued. Prepare the bank application in parallel so nothing is idle.
- Week 2: apply for banking with matching documents. Clean applications frequently clear within 12 to 24 hours.
- Week 3: payment processor onboarding, using the same business description everywhere.
- Week 4: diarise the annual federal filing and the Wyoming annual report.
Four weeks from nothing to invoicing is realistic when the EIN does not stall. Eight to twelve weeks is what happens when it does — and the difference is almost entirely down to how the SS-4 was filed and whether anyone followed up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an ITIN to get an EIN?
No. This is the most persistent myth in this space. A foreign responsible party can obtain an EIN with no SSN and no ITIN by filing Form SS-4 through the international channels.
How much does Northwest charge for an EIN?
It is priced as a flat add-on at checkout. The IRS itself charges nothing — you are paying for the filing work and the follow-up.
Can Northwest get an EIN faster if I pay more?
There is no expedited tier at the IRS. Speed comes from the submission channel and from someone following up, not from a premium fee.
What if my EIN application is rejected?
Usually it is a form error and you refile. Occasionally the IRS issues a notice requesting clarification, which must be answered in writing. Either way, the clock restarts, which is why getting it right the first time matters more than the fee.
Is the EIN tied to my personal tax situation?
The EIN identifies the entity. Being the responsible party does not by itself create a personal US filing obligation, but your own tax residency and the nature of your income do affect the answer. Our non-resident overview covers the general shape; specifics deserve a conversation.
Want the EIN in days, not weeks?
Our packages include the formation, the registered agent and the EIN filed the way the IRS handles foreign responsible parties — typically issued within 24 to 72 hours — for $529 with state fees included. See what is in each package, or tell us your situation and we will confirm whether your case is straightforward before you pay anything.
