US Banking for Icelandic Founders: Mercury, Relay & Wise Business (2026)
Once your Wyoming LLC is filed and your EIN arrives, the next question every Icelandic founder asks is: which US bank should I actually apply to? This 2026 guide compares the three neobanks currently approving Icelandic-owned single-member LLCs โ Mercury, Relay and Wise Business โ with real approval odds and the exact documents you will need.
Why not a traditional US bank?
Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo all still require an in-person visit to a US branch to open a business account for a non-resident. If you are not planning to fly to New York, Miami or LA, they are effectively closed to Icelandic founders. Neobanks solve this by onboarding you 100% remotely via video KYC and passport verification.
Mercury โ the default recommendation
Mercury is our default recommendation for Icelandic Wyoming LLC owners. Approval rates in 2026 are above 90% when the application is submitted with the right supporting documents. We are an official Mercury Partner, which means our clients receive a warm introduction and expedited review.
- Free USD checking account with debit card.
- ACH, wire and international SWIFT (~USD 5 outbound).
- Virtual cards for SaaS spend, integrated with QuickBooks and Xero.
- No monthly fees, no minimum balance.
Documents required:
- Icelandic passport (valid, not expiring within 6 months).
- Proof of Icelandic address (utility bill, bank statement) in English or with a translation.
- EIN letter (CP-575 or 147C).
- Articles of Organization.
- Custom Operating Agreement.
- Brief description of business activities (2โ3 sentences) and expected monthly transaction volume.
Relay โ the operations account
Relay is our second-choice recommendation, and often what founders eventually add alongside Mercury for departmental budgeting. Relay offers up to 20 sub-accounts under one EIN, which is useful for founders segregating operating cash, tax reserves and payroll floats.
Wise Business โ for multi-currency flows
Wise Business excels if your revenue mix includes GBP, EUR and other non-USD currencies (common for Icelandic operators serving both EEA and US markets). Wise provides local receiving details in 10+ currencies, so a British client can pay you in GBP without any wire fee.
ISK โ USD flow: what actually happens
Most Icelandic founders never touch ISK inside the LLC. Client pays USD to Mercury โ funds sit in Mercury USD โ you invoice yourself as owner distribution โ transfer via Wise personal to your Icelandic krรณna account when you need spending money. This structure eliminates constant ISK/USD FX exposure at the operating level.
What to do if Mercury declines you
Mercury declines roughly 8% of Icelandic applications in 2026 โ usually because of vague business descriptions, missing Operating Agreements, or an address mismatch between the EIN letter and your Icelandic ID. If declined, do not reapply immediately. Reach out to us โ we can package the file with a Mercury Partner cover note and Relay as a parallel application. See our full Iceland setup guide for the recovery playbook.
Stripe US, PayPal US and other rails
Once your Mercury account is live, you can plug it into Stripe US (not Stripe Iceland โ Stripe US supports more product categories and lower reserves), PayPal Business US, Deel, Gusto and any US enterprise AP portal that requires ACH details. This is the operational unlock that makes the Wyoming structure worthwhile.
Compliance reminders
US business banking triggers two Icelandic obligations you should not forget:
- Skatturinn reporting โ declare foreign bank accounts and any distributions.
- FBAR (FinCEN 114) โ if you are ever a US signer on foreign accounts over USD 10,000 aggregate, you must file. Most Icelandic-only owners are not, but confirm with a cross-border advisor.
Details on the Icelandic side in our Skatturinn compliance guide.
