Why founders even look beyond Mercury
Mercury covers 95% of non-resident Wyoming LLC use cases: US ACH in and out, wires, virtual and physical debit cards, sub-accounts, Stripe/PayPal payouts, and Treasury for idle cash. What Mercury does not do well: hold non-USD balances, receive payouts in EUR/GBP from European marketplaces without conversion loss, or extend an actual charge-card credit line to a company with no US credit history.
The three names that come up every week from our clients are Relay, Wise Business and Brex. Each solves a specific gap. None of the three is a drop-in replacement for Mercury — they are complements or fallbacks. This page is written from the point of view of a non-US resident owning a Wyoming LLC, using tools that all three providers publish and current as of 2026.
Relay — the closest 1-to-1 Mercury alternative
Relay is a Toronto-based fintech built on Thread Bank (member FDIC) with a business banking product that closely mirrors Mercury: no monthly fee, ACH and wire support, up to 20 individual checking accounts inside one login, virtual and physical Visa debit cards, and QuickBooks/Xero integration.
Eligibility for non-residents: Yes. Relay accepts single-member Wyoming LLCs with a non-US owner if the entity has an EIN and you can pass ID verification remotely. Passport plus proof of address in your home country is standard. No US SSN or ITIN required for the owner-application flow.
Where Relay wins: the multi-account structure. If you run three brands or a Profit-First bookkeeping system, Relay's sub-account model is cleaner than Mercury's. Domestic wires are $0 outgoing (Mercury charges nothing either, so parity). Automatic transfer rules between accounts are more flexible than Mercury's.
Where Relay loses: no built-in Treasury sweep for idle cash yield, no direct API for developer-heavy SaaS. Opening speed is 2–7 business days versus our 12–24 hours on Mercury.
Wise Business — the multi-currency answer
Wise Business is not a US bank; it is an EMI (electronic money institution) holding client funds in ring-fenced accounts with partner banks. For a Wyoming LLC it provides US ACH details (routing + account number issued through JP Morgan Chase), plus local receiving details in EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, NZD, HUF, SGD and more.
Eligibility for non-residents: Yes, and specifically strong here — Wise Business was built for global founders. Wyoming LLC with EIN plus passport is accepted. The onboarding review is typically 3–5 business days; some countries (Russia, Belarus, Iran, sanctioned states) are excluded.
Where Wise wins: receiving payments in the customer's own currency without USD conversion. If you invoice a UK client in GBP, the GBP hits your GBP balance at mid-market rate. Stripe payouts can land in USD on your Wise USD account. Foreign-exchange fees are typically 0.35–0.6% versus Mercury's implicit 1–3% via partner FX.
Where Wise loses: not a full bank — no cheques, limited wire receipts from some US originators, no lending or Treasury products. The card is a debit-only Visa. Wise is a receiving-and-paying tool, not an operating account for a US-facing company that must show reserves.
Brex — the corporate-card answer (with caveats)
Brex is a corporate charge card and cash management platform for venture-backed startups. It is a card issuer partnered with Column N.A. for banking. Credit decisions are made on the company's balance, not the owner's personal credit — attractive to founders with no US credit history.
Eligibility for non-residents: Restricted. As of 2026, Brex has narrowed its Cash and Card products to companies with a minimum balance profile (historically ~$50k) or explicit venture-capital funding. Non-resident-owned bootstrapped LLCs are often rejected at the ID verification step. Every non-resident client we have seen approved either had a Y-Combinator batch, a US-based co-founder or a six-figure Stripe payout history already.
Where Brex wins: generous rewards (points on SaaS, ads, travel), spend controls per employee, automatic receipt capture, and the best expense-management dashboard in the category. If you burn on Google Ads or AWS, Brex points beat Mercury cashback by a wide margin.
Where Brex loses: eligibility for solo non-resident founders is unreliable. Brex is not a Mercury alternative for most readers of this page — it is a supplementary card once you already have a live US operating account.
The recommended stack by use case
Solo freelancer / consultant. Mercury for USD operating + Wise Business for receiving EUR/GBP invoices from EU clients. Skip Brex and Relay until revenue justifies more complexity.
Ecommerce / Amazon FBA. Mercury as the primary account (Amazon direct-deposits US ACH cleanly), plus Wise for supplier payments to China/Vietnam in CNY/VND. Add Relay only if you run multiple brands.
SaaS founder taking Stripe payouts. Mercury for operating + Treasury on idle runway. Wise for receiving payouts in non-USD if you sell in multiple currencies. Brex once ARR exceeds $200k and you have real ad spend.
Crypto / OTC trader. Mercury frequently declines pure crypto flows. Use Relay as the primary operating account and pair with a regulated exchange (Kraken, Coinbase Prime) that supports the LLC's EIN. Avoid Wise — Wise blocks most crypto exchanges.
Holding company / IP holdco. Mercury alone. No need for multi-currency or corporate cards on a dormant balance-sheet entity.

Common Mistakes When Picking a Mercury Alternative
- 1
Applying to Brex first because 'startups use Brex'
Brex has quietly restricted approvals for bootstrapped non-resident LLCs. Applying and getting rejected creates a data point on your file that some other providers see. Start with Mercury or Relay; approach Brex only once you have traction.
- 2
Treating Wise Business as a full bank
Wise is an EMI, not FDIC-insured. It safeguards funds at partner banks. Use it for flow, not for parking six figures of runway.
- 3
Ignoring the Relay opening timeline
Relay is a solid alternative, but its onboarding queue is currently longer than Mercury's Partner flow. Do not switch mid-tax-season expecting instant access.
- 4
Running crypto flows through Mercury or Wise
Both providers flag frequent exchange transfers. For crypto-heavy businesses, Relay is more tolerant, but always disclose the business model upfront to avoid a mid-cycle account closure.
- 5
Skipping the compliance basics
No US business account will stay open if your Form 5472 is late or your BOI report is missing. Bank compliance teams pull public and FinCEN records — the entity must be in good standing.
